Taste and use
Sweet and liquorice-like, far stronger than anise seed. Not hot. One star gives a pot its base note; two turn it into a liquorice dish.
About this product
The dried eight-pointed fruit of Illicium verum. It goes in whole at the start of biryani and korma and steeps in chai masala. A single star is enough for four portions and is lifted out before serving. It is also part of Chinese five-spice.
