Taste and use
Earthy and stronger than the white dehusked form, with a noticeable bite from the skin. Cooked properly the halves are soft but still separate and thicken the liquid only lightly.
About this product
Halved urad beans with the black skin left on. Chilka means skin: the dal stays grainy and takes on the dark speckling that the dehusked white form lacks. It is cooked into dal and, in North India, into a quicker dal makhani. For split pulses, soaking is not mandatory.
